Wow, it’s been way too long since my last post.

Part of it is due to me taking another trip abroad. A business trip, this time, to South Africa. That doesn’t cover my entire quiet period, but a sizeable week of it. The rest is compromised of both sheer laziness, and some other things I have to do. Anyone knows of a reputable store where I can buy some free time?

My company has a client in Bloemfontein, and I have been sent there to help with the installation of a new system. So a few of the days were work, but a few were free time to tour the city and the area.

Overall it’s a very nice area, and I had a lot of fun. I will try to do better at posting some of the highlights here, though naturally nothing work-related and without identifying most of the people I saw.

I’ve been very lax at reporting about my US trip (oh, yes, need to get back to that as well), but since this one is shorter, and I want to write some of these things anyway, there’s a good chance I’ll actually pull through with it this time.

I did some minor fixes to the site’s layout and CSS file a few days ago. In a typical manner, while fixing things that weren’t particularly visible, I managed to break something else that was more noticeable, and didn’t really notice myself.

So if anyone actually visited the site over the last few days, you may have seen that the overall width of the page was incorrect, and the sidebar had the wrong width. It wasn’t critical, and could have been easily ignored, but it was there.

In any case, it’s fixed now, and everything should be in order. Or, at least, in as much order as it was before.

And since this blog runs on WordPress, this mean I upgraded (security issues, as usual… Annoying, probably not a risk for me anyway, but better be safe than sorry).

However I did try to only change the files that were actually changed, instead of the whole thing, meaning that stuff may be broken if I missed anything.

So if something does appear broken, please let me know. If it involves comments, then I have an email address on the about page, but it shouldn’t come to that since I’m going to test the comments myself right now…

Due to some serious problems from TypePad, where this blog was hosted until now, I’ve moved it to WordPress, on a ‘normal’ hosting provider.

For the last four days or so I was practically unable to post anything on my TypePad blog. According to the TypePad support team (as explained by a nice lady called Brenna) this is because of problems with DST.

Yes, that’s right, due to daylight savings. Something to do with the way they generate archives. So yes, stopping the archives seem like a working workaround, but it’s ugly. It’s broken. And it took them too long to even get that far.

So I moved this away for now. The design and behaviour were of course changed, but I tried to at least start with relatively similar look and feel, and make sure that not too many things are broken. Still, if stuff seems too odd, this is a work in progress, but please do leave a comment instead it’s a problem I’m not aware of.

Hopefully I could straighten out the kinks soon enough.

Hello everybody (This being the one post nobody will probably read, as this blog is brand new, and I’m not linking out of this post, saying everybody might be a bit too much. But Hello nobody won’t be proper in case someone do come in, so there).

I have now officially joined the (small but oh, so very loud) ranks of the blogging masses.
Not quite sure what I think about it, but I suppose my overall attitude has to be positive, or I wouldn’t have done it. Makes sense. Question is if I do.

So let’s go over some technical details.

Individual archives for all posts. I really <STRIKE>Hate</STRIKE> Don’t like those multiple posts in one page. Makes it very hard to find something, or to link to something. Named anchors are a wonderful concept, but regularly seem to fail miserably on the real world.

Comments would be open for all posts. Of course part of the reason is that I don’t expect much, so can leave the possibility open. Even was it otherwise, I would still try to leave comments open. If someone wants to… well… comment, then they should be able to.
I do reserve the right, however, to change my mind at the future if for some inexplicable reason I find my posts pulling in comment spam or flame wars. Shouldn’t happen in the foreseeable future, though.

No explicit spellchecking will be done on posts, unless I catch myself in some dreadfully embarrassing mistakes, or unless someone else complains.
Meaning I won’t take the whole post and run it through a spellchecker. I would however not insert spelling mistakes on purpose. I would also try to read posts at least once before posting, so I have a decent chance of catching glaringly obvious errors. Or not.
Although I probably will change my opinion on this one if I actually get readers. It’s just not worth the effort when only I read it.

Feed will contain full text of posts. I don’t expect any serious bandwidth problems anytime soon… ;-)

As for what I’ll be posting about… I don’t have any clear ideas except for the next few posts. Those however should not be taken as thematically representative, just as some things I want to get off my chest about now. I hope in time I’ll find myself either focusing better, or not focusing but not caring about it.
Time will tell.

That’s it for now.
